The Poo Rock

Recently a student brought me "rock" one of her coworkers asked me to identify. She called it the Poo Rock. See why?

So far I've determined it's not really a rock at all, but a piece of metal. It conducts electricity. It's density is close to that of selenium, but it's probably not selenium, but rather an alloy of some sort. My next step is to determine it's specific heat, and try to find an alloy that matches its density and specific heat.

  1. How did you discover that it conducts electricity? :)

  2. Thanks for asking! I attached three wires: one from the "rock" to a 9-volt battery, one from the other terminal of the battery to a voltmeter (borrowed from Blackburn), and the third from the other terminal of the voltmeter back to the "rock". The voltmeter showed exactly 9 volts! However, it showed no current, probably because the contacts between the wires and the "rock" were poor.

  3. Maybe it is poo, from someone/something that ate a lot of iron. Or, if this was an episode of House, M.D., it would be that the person suffers from Wilson's Disease and can't process copper. Of course you would only have figured that out after beginning immunosuppressant therapy for Lupus.

  4. I finally watched an episode of House and it seems to me to be a terrible show. Apparently, being annoying now substitutes for actual character.

In other news, the mystery of the rock is pretty awesome.
